Both are good retirement accounts to consider and offer many benefits as you plan for your future. However, there are several key differences to keep in mind when determining which account makes the most sense for your individual needs.

Traditional IRA

Description

A Traditional IRA may allow you to make pre-tax contributions

Best suited for:

Someone who wants to reduce their tax burden in the current year. It might be right for you if you have a high income today and expect to be in a lower tax bracket during retirement.

Taxes

Contributions grow tax-deferred. Tax-deductible.

(subject to income limitations for participants in employer-sponsored plans)

Annual Max Contributions apply. Anyone is eligible to contribute with earned, taxable income. No age contribution restrictions

Withdrawals

Penalty-free but taxed as current income after age 59 ½ Mandatory distributions after age 73.
